In 1989, with the support of the National Geographic Society and the State of Delaware, a small group of Delaware educators set out to make the world more accessible to Delaware school children. The Delaware Geographic Alliance has grown to become a collaborative of nearly 600 K-12 educators, university geographers, pre-service education faculty, and GIS practitioners, all working together to strengthen geography education in Delaware. The Alliance believes that every Delaware student deserves an education that engages them in exploration of geographic knowledge and perspectives.

Our office is housed within the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences at the University of Delaware. Currently, we receive funding from the State of Delaware and various school districts. Additional project support and sponsorship have come from the Delaware River and Bay Authority, U.S. Department of Education, ESRI, Artesian Water Company, Delaware River and Bay Authority, Rand McNally, the Wilmington Rotary Club, the World Affairs Council of Wilmington, Delaware Space Grant, Delaware Sea Grant, the Kalmar Nyckel Society, NOAA, and the Wilmington Area Planning Council.

After thirty years of consistent effort, Geography is now firmly established in the public school curriculum in the state of Delaware. Geography standards are established for grades K-12, and geography is assessed as a part of the social studies. DGA has become a trusted partner of Delaware's Dept. of Education, public school districts, and allied agencies, especially the Social Studies Coalition of Delaware. But challenges remain. Many teachers lack sufficient training, teaching resources are stretched then, and access to outdoor experiences is limited. World events and new technologies demand that we adapt quickly to meet the needs of today's teachers and learners. Now, more than ever, the support of DGA is needed. We welcome the opportunity to introduce students to their world for years to come.

The Delaware Geographic Alliance

Originally founded as the Delaware Geographic Alliance (DGA) in 1989, we rebranded ourselves in 2019 as we begin our fourth decade of service to Delaware's K-12 teachers and students.
